I promised you that I would share the review of my recent gallery exhibit “Places & Names” that was published in the French newspaper La Montagne. Below I am sharing the original review in French, followed by this author’s translation to English. Also included is the exhibit statement that the gallery director wrote for the exhibition, of which I am so proud.

René D. Shoemaker expose ses œuvres jusqu’au 31 décembre à la galerie des Marches à Aubusson.
René D. Shoemaker peint le fragment, la légèreté dans le mouvement. De ses déambulations en Géorgie d’Amérique jusqu’ici en Creuse, où elle vit depuis six ans une grande partie de l’année, elle revient à l’atelier avec ses croquis et des images dans la tête : « Je cherche en premier la profondeur, l’espace pour la couleur, cet espace en négatif qui est le vide ou le fond de l’œuvre. Ensuite l’écriture, les objets, des aperçus d’architectures par exemple, apparaissent à la surface en positif ».
Une rêverie où les lieux se répondent
Une façade d’immeuble penchée des reflets de nuages dans ses vitres, un autobus dans la rue, une rivière qui sillonne la plaine, René D. Shoemaker réalise ses images comme des poèmes : une impression générale est recueillie, la couleur choisie pour le fond accueille les objets regardés, reconstituant avec le rythme des lignes et des couleurs, le poème sur la soie. Les supports des œuvres sont en effet des pièces de soie suspendues, appelés paravents ou kakemonos selon leur taille.
« Avec cette exposition nous continuons d’explorer ce questionnement sur l’esthétique du déplacement, indique Jérôme Bel. La soie-poème oscille dans la galerie au passage l’air, de notre mouvement, de notre souffle : les œuvres suspendues, à la fois hautes, puissantes et légères, forment une suite d’allées, de chemins qui saluent et honorent la déambulation du marcheur. »
Est-ce Felletin ou la Géorgie ?
L’exposition interroge nos liens à l’espace et aux lieux : qu’est-ce qui définit et nomme un espace traversé ? Ce clocher d’église ou cette rivière sont-ils de Felletin ou de l’État de Géorgie ? Ils ne nous apparaissent qu’à travers le regard mobile de l’artiste, qui les replace en nous avec une grande maîtrise des encres et de la soie, spécialiste reconnue de cette technique qu’elle enseigne et transmet depuis quarante ans.

René D. Shoemaker exhibits her artwork until December 31 at the Galerie des Marches in Aubusson.
René D. Shoemaker paints the fragment, the lightness in movement. From her wanderings in Georgia, USA to here in La Creuse, where she has lived for six years a large part of the year, she returns to the studio with her sketches and images in her head: "I look first for the depth, the space for the color; this negative space which is the void, or the background of the work. Then follows the writing, the objects, outlines of architecture, for example, appear on the surface in positive.”
A daydream where places respond to each other
A leaning building facade, reflections of clouds in windows, a bus in the street, a river that crosses the plain. René D. Shoemaker creates her images like poems: a general impression is collected, the color chosen for the background welcomes the objects viewed, restructuring the rhythm of lines and colors, the poem on silk. The surface of the works are in fact suspended lengths of silk, called paravents [screens] or kakemonos according to their size.
"With this exhibition we continue to explore this question of the aesthetics of displacement," says Jérôme Bel. “The silk-poem oscillates in the gallery as the air passes by, by our movement, our breath: the suspended works, at the same time high, powerful and light, form a series of alleys, paths that greet and honor the walker’s wandering.
Is it Felletin or Georgia?
The exhibition questions our links to space and to places: what is it that defines and names a space traversed? Is this church steeple or this river from Felletin or from the state of Georgia? They only appear to us through the eyes of the artist, who shares them with a great mastery of dyes and of silk, a recognized specialist in this technique that she has been teaching and imparting for 40 years.

Entre la Creuse et les États-Unis depuis une décennie, l’américaine René D. Shoemaker anime ses délicates surfaces de soie teintée d’une ligne si singulière qu’elle lui vaudrait presque signature ; à donc ne pas confondre avec le seul exercice d’un trait, la vibration d’une telle ligne - qui vivifie autant ses surfaces que la gamme chromatique dont s’investit la légèreté de son matériau de prédilection - cette presque scription par laquelle l’artiste figure peu ou prou des fragments d’une réalité sienne l’ayant un instant au moins entourée, ce modelé si caractéristique de sa mémoire déambulatoire constitue plus qu’un moyen de représentation mais la marque d’un mouvement en partage. Se compose ainsi pleinement le tracé personnel d’une relation au vide que chacune de nos postures, souffles courts ou longues inspirations peu importe, prolonge à chaque pas déjà. Qu’on les comprenne alors comme kakémono ou paravent selon leurs tailles, ses oeuvres sont profondément de « texte-île » ; toutes concernées d’un endroit comme de l’envers, toutes écrivent aussi l’aire d’un silence universel, font résonner l’amplitude d’une tombée muette aussi précieuse que propice et circonscrite par la fragilité d’une indispensable protection : celle due à une responsabilité commune au-delà de la nominativité du réel. Et de la sorte voiles prêtes à flotter au gré de nos regards, songeurs autant que pensifs face à l’intime bénéfice de chaque exil : celui de toutes les nuances des couleurs du temps, autrement inaccessibles. Ainsi disponibles à l’oubli de l’oubli. Alors rêves de présence différée en soi.

A PRESENCE TO SELF / SILK
Notes for “ Places & Names - an installation by René D. Shoemaker ”
Going between the Creuse and the United States for a decade, the American René D. Shoemaker brings her delicate dyed silk surfaces to life with a line so singular that it is almost a signature ; not to be confused with the mere exercise of a line, the vibration of such a line - which enlivens her surfaces as much as the chromatic range which the lightness of her favorite material is invested - this almost-writing by which the artist represents more or less fragments of a reality surrounding her for a moment at least, this modeling so characteristic of her wandering memory forms more than a means of representation but the mark of shared movement. The personal trace of a relationship to the void that each of our postures, short breaths and long inspirations, doesn’t matter, prolongs each step. Let us then understand them as a kakémono or a paravent according to their size, her works are profoundly a "text-island" (« texte-île ») ; revealed as a place and as the inverse, all create a zone of universal silence, resonating the magnitude of a silent fall as precious as it is favorably proposed and restricted by the fragility of an essential protection : that is due to a common responsibility beyond the naming of reality. And so the veils are ready to float responding to our gaze, thoughtful and contemplating, facing the intimate benefit of exile : that all the nuances of the colors of time, otherwise inaccessible. Available to the oblivion of oblivion. Dreams of presence deferred within oneself.
