Gratitude, Thanksgivings, & Plans for the New Year

I love the New Year.

I love New Beginnings.

I love the anticipation of something marvelous just around the corner, and I love setting goals for the new year.

In 2017, my goals include entering a number of juried shows, both here and abroad. I plan to contact art galleries with the intention of finding one to represent my art. I intend to make art all year long, while keeping a schedule and finding a work/life balance that allows me to do what I love and minimize stress. And I intend to become financially stable as an artist, selling enough art to keep buying supplies for my new work – and to fund travel, of course.

As much as I love looking ahead, I also love looking back: reflecting on the year that has ended and taking stock of what worked, what didn’t, and what happened in my family, my art, and my relationship to the world. Reflecting allows me to express gratitude for all that I have: my family, my friends, my health, and the ability to share my art with the world. I am grateful for my team, those who support me and help me pull together the many strands of the life and career I am trying to create. I am grateful to live in a beautiful house in a beautiful place, and to call the woods my home. And I am grateful and excited to have purchased a modest house in rural France that will become a satellite home and studio for Harvey and I. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - >

So, you may ask:
What HAVE I been doing all year?

This, my dear reader, is my artistic year in review:

A Sense of Place: Musings & Reflections on the Completion of a Museum Exhibition

Discovering the Chattahoochee Valley

Silk Paintings by René Shoemaker
August 23, 2015 - July 2016

My exhibit at the Columbus Museum is no longer on display;

the closing reception has come and gone.

The silk paintings are rolled on cores, wrapped securely and labeled with tags.

They have come home.

As I drove back from Columbus with the art laid carefully on the back seat, I had many mixed emotions; thoughts swirled in my head; I vacillated between happiness and sadness.

I am so very, very proud that this exhibit happened.

That Kristen Miller Zohn met me, liked my work, and proposed an exhibition.

That she had a vision, that we communicated well, and we created a body of work that was born by sharing ideas and feedback.

That my artistic vision resonated with others; that my mission in my art was welcomed by the public.

That I was invited to teach, to lecture, to be interviewed by the media and educators. That so many people were interested in what I had to say about my art, and about my life.

That children used my art as inspiration to create their own visions of Columbus.

I am a different person now.

I am more confident, I am strong, I am ready to take on the world.

My future as an artist is still unknown. What exactly is the career path for an artist?

But I know that my vision can be executed, and that I can reap the benefits of sharing my art.

Thank you to all those who have supported me and continue to support me.

To those that believe in me, and always have.

To my family and friends.

And to all those that know me through my art alone.

I have arrived.

Working with my "team" in Paris

Christine+Laure-FirstDay-2014

November 7, 2014. I AM SO HAPPY TO BE IN PARIS!! Met my "team" tonight - Christina Chirouze Montenegro & Laure Jubert. We looked over my art, decided how to hang it, and discussed our philosophies on art and life.

Christina & Laure loved their t-shirts I brought for them. I can tell that these two talented women are going to make great things happen!

Rene+ChristinaShoppingForFrames

November 8, 2014. Out shopping for picture frames, and having a coffee (of course!) at café Loustic in the Marais - where Laure works during the day. Event documented below -  with the inimitable Christina Chirouze Montenegro!

I'm exploring France and calling it research - how awesome is that?  What artwork will come from my current experiences? In just a few days we'll be celebrating the opening of my first exhibit in Paris!
